The November 2005 "T Times"...
In Uganda this October there were two Fall Festivals. Even one is a bit of an oddity here since there is no Fall but we sure celebrated it. One in Mbarara complete with carnival type booths and the Uganda version of a hayride, the banana leaf ride. The next week in Kampala we had a Fall Festival for the Uganda Mission team kids with the highlight being a moonwalk.

The banana leaf ride!
Scary!
Also in October was our team retreat in Kampala. It was a working retreat developing team expectation documents but we also had some fun along the way. Then of course there was the joy of our favorite team activity...THE TEAM PHOTO! (Roll that beautiful team footage) Those are some happy kids! (click HERE to see the pic.)
On November 5 Mark Long, Darla Bennett, Beth Tunick, Katy Lane and I traveled to Rwanda to deliver mattresses for the new dormitories at Imbabazi Orphanage. Mark and Darla drove the mattress float (flatbed) and we bought mattresses in the capital city of Kigali. While shopping around for the best mattress price we met up with a guy that assured us that he had a shop with the best price but we would have to drive him there. After a long wild goose chase through the city, allowing the man to think up a bogus shop location, we pulled up to a locked mattress shop.
From there the man had runners bringing in mattresses on head top from several shops in the area. He only had 23 of the 55 mattresses he promised so we packed them up and began our 3 hour drive to Gisenyi. Plan B was to just give Roz Carr the money to order the remaining 32 mattresses in Gisenyi. We arrived at her house around dark and she was very thankful for our safe arrival and the mattresses and mattress covers. The next day we stopped by the old orphanage facility to show the kids the mattresses before delivering them to the new place. They were excited and very willing to climb up on the mattresses for a snap (photo).

Once they were on top they immediately began singing some of the songs we had taught them this past summer. It was a great Kodak moment! The official orphanage move is planned for November 30. A special thanks to Mark and Darla for driving the mattress truck and making adjustments to the beds. A special thanks also to the many who donated funds for the mattresses and covers.

Have a great Thanksgiving holiday! I will think of you in America as we have our turkey and ribs while you'resleeping. I'm thankful to God for you, your support and for the blessing of working with the Mbarara team in Uganda and Rwanda.
Blessings,
Terri
The October 2005 "T Times"...
It's good to be back home in Mbarara after furlough in America!
My first week back in Uganda had some interesting challenges. Some people go on lion hunts... last Saturday I went on a tire hunt. My new spare tire disappeared off the back of my truck. Once it was discovered missing, two young boys came and said they saw a man carrying it on the back of a boda (motorcycle taxi). So my friend Livingstone and I took chase in my truck. Many along the road had seen the tire thief but we never caught up to him, so we gave up after an hour. On Monday morning I got a call from another friend who had seen two guys trying to sell my tire at a shop. They were stopped just in time and the tire is once again sitting happily on the back of my truck. The tire had fallen off the truck on my street and the men picked it up and were attempting to do what anyone else would do. No charges were filed and everyone went home happy.
School started on Sept. 21 - I'm teaching kindergarten and preschool this year. Thanks to a heads up from America and Becca Smith, the kids were able to experience their first solar eclipse on October 3rd. That was pretty exciting stuff!Sword and Soccer (neighborhood soccer and Bible class) started up again Saturday and there were 18 kids present to learn about how we are the apple of God's eye (Psalm 17:8).
On November 5 I will make the journey (6 hours) to Rwanda and Imbabazi Orphanage to help with the move to their new facility. The Lord willing, my roommates Amy and Beth and Kampala teammate Mark Long will be delivering 75 new mattresses, covers and sheets for their beds. I'm so excited for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these children who need our love!
Thank you for sharing in my life and experiences in Uganda and Rwanda.
May God bless you richly in your neck of the woods.
In God's Love,
Terri
